Drawn into your Presence

The world’s greatest art galleries come to Clapham…for one month only!

Drawn into your Presence is a unique photography exhibition, created by award-winning social documentary photographer, Jim Grover, that pairs 30 enlarged photographs of steel-plate engravings contained in the Victorian-era, Imperial Family Bible, with 30 black and white photographs, taken by Jim Grover, that depict church ministry and faith in south London.  Some of the pairings will deliberately challenge the viewer, “Why are these paired?”.

This is the first time this set of engravings has been exhibited; it’s also the first time that Victorian engravings have been exhibited in this way and at this scale which reveals the extraordinary skills of the engraver and inject new life into familiar iconic artworks.

Madonna della Seggiola
Artist: Raffaelle D’Urbino

 Engraver: William and Francis Holl

The exhibited engravings, works of art in their own right and often taking years to create, include reproductions of iconic paintings by Renaissance masters such as Raphael, Da Vinci, and Titian.  Two thirds of the original paintings are held in the world’s greatest art galleries including the Prado in Madrid, the Vatican Museum, the Louvre in Paris, and the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, and the V&A Museum.  This is thus a unique opportunity to see these iconic artworks, transformed into beautiful monochrome engravings, here in Clapham.

The 30 black and white photographs, that have been paired with the engravings, focus on the life of the church in south London and, in particular, the inspiring ministry of south London priests, men and women with a wide variety of backgrounds but who are all steeped in faith, commitment, hope, and compassion. The photographs have not been previously exhibited.

“Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me”

“Oh let me see thy footprints and in them plant mine own”

A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
